The Race
Ten games back—and still perfectly safe.
On July 22, San Francisco was 65–32 and held a 10-game lead in the National League West. Atlanta was 55–42. Yet with 65 games remaining, the Braves’ Toast Margin was +16.5: not merely alive, but Bread by the model.
What followed was not a collapse in the ordinary sense. The Giants went 38–27 from that point and finished with 103 wins. Atlanta simply played at a historic pace, going 49–16 to erase the deficit.
There was no Wild Card in 1993. One 100-win team would win the division; the other would go home. The race reached the last day tied, and Atlanta won while San Francisco lost.

The Braves caught San Francisco on September 10, then built a four-game lead by September 16.
- Sep. 28–Oct. 2The Giants answer
San Francisco fought back to force ties after four of the final six playing dates. Both clubs entered October 3 at 103–58.
What Happened
One last day. One winner. Two remarkable teams.
Atlanta beat Colorado 5–3 on October 3. Later that day, Los Angeles routed San Francisco 12–1. The Braves finished 104–58 and won the NL West by one game; the 103–59 Giants missed the postseason entirely.
The final standings look like a collapse only if the Giants’ continued excellence is ignored. Toastometer does not ignore it: Atlanta always had enough schedule left for a great team to close the gap.

The verdict is emphatic: Atlanta was never Toast, never even Browning, while it trailed. At the maximum 10-game deficit, the margin was +16.5 because more than two months remained.
The lowest reading came only on October 2, when the teams were tied with one game left. TM +0.9 was Toasty—but that described a dead-even, winner-take-all finish, not a nearly impossible comeback. This is precisely the distinction the metric is meant to expose.
